Community Tool Box - An excellent resource for exercises, background readings, and practical tips for changing real-world communities. The Tool Box provides over 6,000 pages of practical skill-building information on over 250 different topics. Topic sections include step-by-step instruction, examples, and checklists. Instructors can assign sections as background readings or as practical, user-friendly resources for proposing or planning community interventions. Some sections are also very useful for in-class exercises.

The Society for Teaching Psychology (STP; Division 2)- Diversity in Teaching Resources originally developed by the President's Taskforce on Diversity Education (PTDE).

UCPSARNET - a World-wide Interactive Web Resource on University-Community Partnerships. Community researchers in six countries founded this interactive website "to encourage involvement in community, promote participatory social action research, and endorse community leadership that is mindful of cultural diversity and welcomes the opportunity that this diversity brings. We also hope that the platform will become a resource for instructors teaching community related courses." The website team will present examples of community projects and host discussions by community practitioners, students and researchers.

Bissinger, H.G. (2000). Friday night lights. Cambridge, MA: Da Capo Press. - This journalistic account of a Texas high school football team chronicles one community (the team) within another (the city of Odessa), telling a gripping sports tale while providing a lot of context, including race, social class and history, affecting the lives in the story. The book is much richer than the film, which, while the recipient of critical acclaim, is not recommended. (Joseph Berryhill)

Gans, H. J. (1982). The urban villagers: Group and class in the life of Italian-Americans (updated and expanded edition). New York: Free Press. - A classic study of the West End in Boston. The fact that it's dated makes it even more fascinating, since it reveals the values influencing the author's analysis of the community. (Mike Morris)

Kozol, J. (1995). Amazing Grace: The lives of children and the conscience of a nation. New York: Crown Publishers. (Suggested by Shelly Harrell)

Simon, D., & Burns, E. (1997). The corner: A year in the life of an inner-city neighborhood. New York: Broadway Books. - Journalistic in style rather than academic, but most students find this book on a Baltimore neighborhood riveting. Later made into an HBO mini-series. (Mike Morris)

Stack, C. (1974). All our kin: Strategies for survival in a Black community. New York: Harper. - The chronicle of a young white woman's sojourn in The Flats, a low-income African-American community, to study the support system family and friends form when coping with poverty. The result was a landmark study that debunked the misconception that poor families were unstable and disorganized. Families in The Flats adapted to their poverty conditions by forming large, resilient, lifelong support networks based on friendship and family that were very powerful, highly structured and surprisingly complex. All Our Kin is also an indictment of a social system that reinforces welfare dependency and chronic unemployment. (Suggested by Stephanie Riger.)
